Chicken
pox
White spots on torso. Highly infectious. Exclusion
5 days from onset of rash or when all spots have
crusted over.
Hand /
Foot /mouth
White ulcer/spots inside of mouth or between
fingers and toes. No specific exclusion, but could
be the case after consultation with Health
Protection Unit.
Head
Lice
Like dandruff but stuck to scalp hair. Highly
infectious. Treatment is recommended as soon as
possible.
Sickness
If sick at home a period of 48 hours must elapse
before returning to nursery.
Impetigo
Spots grouped in a particular area. Infectious
until lesions are crusted or
healed.
Exclusion
is for 24 hrs after start of
treatment.
Diarrhea
If happens at home a period of 48 hours must
elapse before returning to nursery.
ConJunctivitus
Green discharge from eye. Highly infectious. Can
return 24 hours after the first treatment has been
applied.
Slap
cheek
Bright red cheeks. High fever. Highly infectious.
Can return after symptoms have
passed.
MEASLES
Incubation
period:
10-14
days. Child infectious – 4 days before—14 days
after rash appears.
Exclude:
for 5 days
from onset of swollen glands, or other
symptoms.
Specific
signs and symptoms:
Rash –
starting behind the ears.
Kaplick
spots (white spots inside the
cheek).
Eyes
running.
Face
puffy.
Complications:
Encephalitis
Convulsions
Otitis
Mrdia (middle ear infection)
Conjunctivitis
MUMPS
Incubation
period:
17-21 days. Child infectious from 1 day before—7
days after all swelling has
disappeared.
Exclude:
for 5 days
from onset of swollen glands, or other
symptoms.
Specific
signs and symptoms:
Swollen
glands
Complications:
Danger of sterility in males.
RUBELLA
Incubation
period:
17-18
days.
Child
infectious from 4-7 days before
rash.
Exclude:
for 5 days
from onset of swollen glands, or other
symptoms.
Complications:
Pregnant woman in first 3 months-Foetus could
suffer damage.
VARICELLA
- CHICKEN POX
Incubation
period:
17-21 days.
Child infectious from 2 days before vesicles
appears—5 days afterwards.
All vesicles should dry before contact with other
children.
Complications:
Shingles.
Scarring from scratching especially on the
face.
MENINGITIS
Infectious of the lining of the
brain.
Viral: No
treatment.
Exclude
until recovered.
Bacterial: Antibiotics.
Haemophilus influenza ‘B’:
Immunisation.
Meningococcal in sever cases and
septicemia.
Specific
signs and symptoms:
Headache, Irritability.
Photophobia.
Neck stiffness.
Vomiting- Projectile.
High pitched cry.
Red rash, purple spots.
Drowsy, confused, unconscious and
convulsion.
DIPTHERIA
Incubation
period:
2 - 5 days.
Specific
signs and symptoms:
Grey membrane covering affected part of throat,
can cause airway obstruction.
TETANUS
Incubation
period:
1 - 15 days.
Specific
signs and symptoms:
Muscle spasm.
PERTUSSIS
~WHOOPING COUGH
Incubation
period:
6 - 18 days. Exclude 5 days from commencement of
antibiotic treatment.
3 stages lasting approximately 2
weeks.
THE
CATARRAL PHASE
Runny nose, sneezing.
Hacking cough, (becoming worse especially at
night).
Puffy face.
THE
PAROXYEMAL PHASE
Child starts to whoop and vomit spasm of short
expiratory.
Coughs with long inspiratory whoop.
Mucus and saliva stream from the nose and
mouth.
THE
RECOVERY PHASE
Woops become less frequent at night, less vomiting
during the day, child starts to gain
weight.
Complications:
Convulsions. Epistaxis (nose bleeding) after
severe bouts of coughing.
Tonsillitis
Exclusion
: 24 hrs
from the start of the treatment.
* The
Nursery complies with the Fast Track Infectious
Diseases Notification for the
North
Essex Health Authority.
* Staff
will work with parents/carers to identify diseases
and will research any information that will be
helpful.
* The
nursery is unable to administer any medicine
without prior consent.
